Silver End Village Hall

The Village Hall in Broadway Silver End was opened on 10th May 1928. It has two storeys, built of brick and is thought to be the largest village hall in England, if not the U.K.

It has been used as a cinema, school, dance hall, badminton court, and theatre. It has seen vegetable and flower shows, fayres, dramatic plays, pantomimes, and numerous celebrations in the main hall in its time. It has twice housed a library, a post office sorting office and now has a licenced social club, Parish Council office, Children’s Centre and Heritage Centre. Halls are hired by local clubs and private groups.

The entrance has a memorial to the second world war.

Taken over by Witham Urban Council in 1971, much of the original architecture was destroyed and the windows replaced with a different style, not in keeping with the Modernist design of the building . More recently an attempt has been made by Braintree District Council to return to a design that are more appropriate although now aluminium rather than the original steel.
